The Otwetiri Project (TOP)

Our Story

Since we began in 2007, we have held several fundraising events - from garage sales, car-wash, wine tasting to African cultural and traditional events - that have helped us to rebuild a dilapidated 3-classroom block with a computer room and a warehouse for the Otwetiri JSS & Primary School in Ghana, West Africa. This school serves over 400 students from the village and its surrounding communities. 

Tometi’s link to the Davis soccer community as a youth coach has truly advanced the project's reach and sport network. Friends from the city's greater community have become instrumental in evolving the project into a non-profit organization, which was needed to accelerate the project’s purpose.

In 2014, Tometi organized a soccer tournament called the Davis California Challenge Cup, which was played among village schools in and around the village of Otwetiri, Ghana. This tournament helped to establish the relationship between the City of Davis, California, and these rural villages. The tournament also promoted teamwork and life lessons and brings joy to the children and spectators.

Also, an Under 12  Girls soccer team that Tometi coaches held school supply fundraisers and birthday parties, at which small donations to the Otwetiri project were given instead of presents. Emerson Junior high students conducted a book drive to collect hundreds of books for the children in Otwetiri. These books were shipped to Ghana with funds provided by the Davis Rotary Club.  

Soccer team jerseys and athletic equipment have all also be sourced by contributors in Davis, and while some of these items have made their way to Ghana and Togo, some items cannot be shipped until more funding becomes available.
